Event Venue of the Month: Gateway Center By: Corrie McDowell

An outstanding venue that we work with a lot is the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames. Their level of detail and services provided make them excellent event partners and our entertainers know that when they work at the Gateway, they will be well taken care of from a venue standpoint, and the event will run smooth when they work with the staff and event managers. If you’re planning an event in Ames, be sure to give them a visit!

Leading the charge at the Gateway is Jacque Uthe, Event Coordinator — who produces amazing events and creates happy clientele. I recently had a chance to interview Jaque via email for this newsletter:

Q. What’s great, personally, about being in the event business? What do you do on a daily basis?

A. I started at Gateway in May 2012 and it has been such a great fit for me. As the wedding coordinator, I am as involved in the weddings as the brides want me to be; sometimes I’ll go along to floral/décor appointments and help couples decide what works in the space, and sometimes I’m just making recommendations for vendors that fit with their personality/vision for the day.

I’m always available to talk out an idea or offer my 2 cents and I’m here on the wedding day to ensure it go as the bride has planned. I have so much fun working with couples and helping them turn their vision into a reality. The best part is getting to see all the different ideas come to life. I’m still trying to convince my husband we need to renew our vows every few years so I can steal some of these ideas!

Q. What Type of Events do you do at the Gateway?

A. I’m in charge of everything social, so I get the fun stuff; Weddings, Holiday Parties, Baby Showers, Anniversaries, etc. We also host many corporate events, athletic groups and city wide conferences.

Q. It’s a very professional and uniquely refreshing experience for our resident DJ’s to work at the Gateway. What is it that makes the facility a great place to host events?

A. What makes Gateway unique is the details. We listen to a groups vision and hear the details. I had a groom from out of state who wanted a keg that wasn’t distributed in Iowa. I happened to be taking a family trip to a state that distributed the beer and was able to surprise him with bottles of his favorite beer on his wedding day.

If it’s Grandma’s birthday we’d be sure to put a candle on her slice of wedding cake. Even for groups that just use the hotel for their guest room block we always make sure the front desk has the agenda so if a wedding guest doesn’t remember where the ceremony is we can help. We take the time to get the extra information so the day is effortless for the group.

It also doesn’t hurt that we have the best food–I always hear comments about how great the service & food are.

The other great thing about the Gateway is the Waterfall Garden Patio- we have an awesome outdoor space so you can have your ceremony & reception on property and then you don’t have to worry about guests getting from point A to point B.
